I believe that is called a composting privy.

As an aside, the A.T. will no longer run past it since the new bridge should be finished by now and there will no longer be a relo there.

No, that's just a concrete hole in the ground which gets pumped out once in a while. A common, low maintenance FS design where road access is available. A composting toilet takes a lot of maintenance to work properly.

Yes I believe it is called a vault toilet.

I got a shuttle from PATC member once that was in charge of trail maintenance for Maryland. He indicated that Maryland would not allow new pit toilets so any new shelters had to be vault type toilets. He was involved with the Ed Garvey Shelter project and he indicated the biggest hassle was the club had to get a long term right of way from a road so that when the tank needed to be pumped they could drive a pump truck through the woods to get to the vault.

There is somewhat infamous case in NH where the national forest relocated a campground at one point and built a new vault toilet. It was accessed via an old logging road with some old culverts. We had a Hurricane come through and it washed the culverts out They spent a very large amount of emergency funding intended to repair trails to rebuild the bridges and the road so that they could get a pump truck to pump the vault out. Its definitely a road to nowhere.

I'm surprised they aren't allowing new composting privies.

They do take a lot of maintenance. Ideally, someone has to lug up wood chips, then someone has to go up and empty the bins and stir the poop, remove any garbage, spread last years compost out into the woods. As someone who has maintained a couple of composting privies, I can tell you it's not a job you can get very many people to volunteer to do.

Another NH vault privy story is a good one. Some guy was fleeing from the State Police and decided a good placed to hide was down in the soup at the bottom of one of these privies. I forget how they found him, likely the next person who when to take a dump. Guess it was a real stinky job getting him out of there

When I was at Ed Garvey this past spring there was no pit or anything to pump. The privy was up on stilts about 4ft off the ground with the bottom surrounded with chain link fencing containing the biggest pile of poop and toilet paper I had ever seen

I guess the pumping issue became a problem at the Garvey Shelter. When I was there after he told me the story I was looking for where the woods road would drive in. Sure looked remote to me.

There was rather infamous disturbed individual in NH that got his rocks off by standing in the pit of womens vault toilets in the WMNF. The first time he got busted he claimed he had dropped his watch in and was looking for it. I think he went to jail. I dont know what his excuse was when he busted him the second time.
