Last year, I hiked the Long Trail for the 3rd time. This trail is special for me because my first backpack 41 years ago was on the LT. And now that I live in Vermont, it's tempting to hike it more frequently.

Sounds like the CT is special to you. Go ahead and hike it again. The scenery will be the same (spectacular), but you'll feel different because you can only do something for the first time once.

You didnt miss much, but a 7 mile roadwalk on shadeless gravel road. Honestly....they could do much better. Not against the hot dry low elevation terrain, its part of CO.

Do as CR suggested. Incorporate the CDT into a CT hike. Start a SOBO CT LASH on the CDT north of Silverthorne. Eliminate the portion south of Silverthorne. OR, start at Roxborough SP and veer into Lost Creek Wilderness. These alternates are so much more scenic IMO and allow for more adventure. Get away from the guidebooks. Design your own hike. That's is what HYOH is truly about.

    Dogwood,
    You blaspheme the OCD Dogma.
There is but one trail and one direction.
While we’re tearing down the pseudo semi traditions, here’s another thought:
CT Northeast - CDT - CT Southwest. Right?

Cool, enjoy! Nothing wrong with hiking Waterton Canyon, especially if you get an early start, not at all sunny and hot in the morning there this time of year. About a third of the time you'll see big horn sheep, very cool, and the river walk is nice. I understand Bear Creek is bone dry, so don't expect to get water there (around mile 9). You might have to carry water for the entire section 1 (to the Platte). We have gotten a ton of rain lately, perhaps bear creek now has some flow... check guthook reports.

IMHO, you're starting the CT pretty much at the ideal time. Please do the west side option of the Collegiates! I just did it yet again (am I crazy too?) as a leg stretcher. Gorgeous, much more scenic than the east side.

We're heading out Tuesday for the southern half (Monarch Pass->Durango, about 230 miles) as we've never hiked that in one swell foop.

Yes Colorado Rob, you must be crazy too. And smart.

I hit copper last night and so far this hike is much nicer than my June trip. Warm but not sweltering days with cool nights much more active wildlife. Although not full on fall yet, the colors are much more vibrant. The trail is not crowded, nor empty.

    I'm loving it

If you really love hiking, you will go back, again and again, for the rest of your life.

So many thru hikers get this wrong. You are never finished with a trail.

There's nothing wrong with repeating a trail. I've done the Ozark Highlands twice and repeated parts of the AT and CT as well.

But as long as there is spectacular places you haven't been...... There's not many good reasons to keep repeating the same thing..... Even though different seasons tend to make Trails totally different.

accessibility counts for a lot and if it's close to you it's better to be out there on the same Trail then not out there at all

Planning my fourth trip to the Foothills Trail....
Let's head for the roundhouse; they can't corner us there!
