Yikes, I'm surprised this guy didn't start a forest fire. If you going to use a wood stove, at least clear all the leafs and twigs and other combustibles away from the stove first! Better yet, put it on a big rock.
Here's my wood stove. A Dinty Moor beef stew can with a row of 1/4" holes drilled along the top and bottom and a couple of 1" holes to feed sticks in from the side. I painted it black with high temp paint to keep the can from rusting. It fits into MSR titanium pot. I wrap the stove can in a cut down plastic shopping bag to keep the inside of the pot clean.

You might not want to reinvent the wheel-
One of the nicest off the shelf items to base a stove off of:
ikea "ordning" cutlery caddy http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30131716/

This was in my back yard, and I was babysitting it the whole time. I did clear the duff from underneath. I had a piece of aluminum underneath, and I actually wanted to see if it would spread, and it never really did.
I would definitely take better precautions and use LNT principles out on the trail. Thanks for showing your stove!
Try stacking your twigs in the vertical position and light from the top.
thanks for sharing your DIY project :-)
