It was reposted from the FB group "Real World - New Hampshire"

fire is good for a forest
Wow
I'm just surprised this doesn't happen more often(assuming the rumor that it was campfire-started)... there's just so many people who are careless/clueless with their fires
The problem with fires of this type is that the ground is mostly rocks and boulders, they can usually control it but getting it out can take a good heavy rainstorm as the fire gets down under the rocks and boulders. There was similar one over near the Rattle River trail on the side of Shelburne Moriah several years ago that took weeks to put out.
A week ago today I was escorted out of an area by a ranger when they were going to do a controlled burn and neglected to post a closure notice. I chatted with a water tanker driver then carried on and was intercepted a mile down the trail, apparently at least some of the crew thought a 110 acre burn was less than 1/4 mile across and so let me go. In reality it was more like 1.5 miles. This was in the area of the Michner cabin in Michaux State Forest in southern PA. I was amazed they thought 500gal of water in a tanker would have any effect.
It was suggested that a meteor may have caused the fire...
http://www.unionleader.com/safety/Of...eteor-10042017 Another article I read said the man who reported the meteor came out of the woods. I think they need to speak with that guy in some more depth if he actually was coming out of the woods.
I have friends in the Woodstock area, hopefully it stays contained on the side closest to town.

Today's Union Leader says it may have been started by a meteorite. Now that's thinking outside the box!

The Orionids (remnants of Halleys comment) are ramping up this week. The report was a passerby saw a meteor flying over. Far more likely a cigarette butt from a tourist. Of course there was a famous UOF incident just east of the location years ago.
If anybody runs into a hiker named Dilly Cliff and his sidekick Meteor nab the culprits.
Seriously though the overlook on the cliff is ~3/4 mile roundtrip. Says it's a steep trail but it could have been a tourist.
Or some teenagers.
Or an AT hiker.
Or even a M%$÷#&/F*<+@Łng meteor!
