Backpacking knife of choice a Swiss Tinker model has a can opener I've used rather extensively whether on trail or when in town.

A P-38 type can opener is only 8 grams; the weight penalty is mostly in the liquid in the can, then the can itself, and the can opener is the least part.

I predicted years ago can openers will be obsolite . With more in pouches and popoff cans, you don't need one like years ago. There will come a time when a p38 will be extra useless weight.

I have one on my key ring at all times. I've even wore one out! Never used it on the trail but plan to carry mine to the grave.

I got rid of the P38 a few years ago when Hormel chili made their cans pop top.

That is the only canned stuff I carry when I'm doing a quick, short trip into the woods to test something and don't want to waste one my my MH dinners.
