    Default Long Trail Asbestos Mine

More than a few folks don't realize that when hiking the Long Trail they are walking right by a very large former asbestos mining complex. The trail runs along the opposite side of the ridge but there is spur trail to fire tower on the summit, which looks down over it.

Local realtors used to advertise prime properties in Eden Vt with frontage on the Long Trail for reasonable bucks, usually it was near the mine.

You can see the tailing piles on the SE side of Belvidere Mtn. from miles away. Pretty impressive site, if you're a fan of mid-20th century industry. Very hazardous site if you're interested in your health.

Not hazardous at all in it's raw form. It's when refined and becomes a fine dust, that's when it's dangerous.

Somehow the miners had high cancer rates and died early
Of course usually were heavy smokers too
