    Default SOBOs in Maryland

Question: When do the SOBOs usually reach Maryland? I'd like to provide some trail magic in Pen Mar Park in September. I was at Pen Mar Park in June with trail magic. We fed 25 thru hikers and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait to do it again.

On average they will be at the trails mid point a bit over 3 months. With a June 15th start they should be there about mid September. On behalf of all thru-hikers...thank you.

And you'll probably have to camp out at a road crossing for a week or two to meet a handful of them.

The second and third weeks of September should see the most SOBOs in Maryland, but that's not going to be a huge number. If you set up on a weekend you can at least be certain that you will catch some section hikers and day hikers in case the SOBOs are scarce.

Thank you. Planning on 9/21/17. Hopefully I'll get to feed some.

When do you predict they will reach Shenandoah? Any idea how many are still hiking?

Mid-September through early October is when they should be at their peak. I have no idea how many are still out there but if past years are any indication a little less than half of those who started will still be on the trail by the time they hike through northern Virginia.
