Default Bear Activity - Approach Trail / AT to Hawk Mtn Shelter

This from Ron Brown's FB Page:

    Heads up!
Just got back from getting two girls off Springer. Because the bear in the video I posted earlier has moved further south to black Gap Shelter on the approach trail. Again, he is not running away and he is getting closer to everybody. Fortunately the girls had their food in the food box. But he scored two backpacks. The girls told me they blew their whistles constantly and the bear did not move away. He is getting braver every day.
Be aware of your surroundings at all times. please be careful.
So far he is working the area between Black Gap shelter and Hawk Mt. shelter

Wow! Same bear? That's a lot of real estate to cover.

Yeah I'm not sure how they know it's the same one. That said, if he's hitting the shelters it makes some sense. He knows where they are and likely just divides his time between each.

True story from " bear in the back seat"

In gsmnp a researcher was baiting a trap with sardines, and a bear watched him
So he stepped back to see what bear would do
Bear cautiously took bait without triggering trap
He tried baiting it again and again, various ways
Each time the bear got the bait without triggering the trap
He finally decided the bear was too smart and left to bait another trap several miles away.

When he got to the next trap, the same bear was already there ....waiting for him.

Just got a report that a bear has been captured near Springer parking lot, presumably the same one.

If it's been habituated to taking food from people it's likely to be put down but possibly relocated....
