Planning on doing the Tellico Gap to Fontana Dam section in October, and would like to know the best route into Tellico. I understand that there are two ways in, but I'd like to find out which road is better if possible.

Tipi Walter is the authority on that area. I'm sure he will chime in eventually.

The Tellico Gap the poster is talking about is nowhere near Tellico Plains, TN. It's south on the AT from the NOC by about 8 miles or so. I don't have a map in front of me, but I always took the west approach from the state road up from the rafting put in and hung a left on another state road that turned into a gravel road. You'll see high voltage power lines when you get close to the gap. There is another way in from the east off of Highway 28 (?), but am unfamiliar with that exact route or condition of the road. I'm sure someone will chime in quickly with more precise directions.
That's what I was kinda wonderin---subject line says parking area but post wants directions to tellico....
and would that be tellico plains?
Sorry for the confusion. Yes, Tellico Gap south of the NOC. There is supposedly a parking area there, accessible off of Hwy 74.
I have only driven up to Tellico Gap from Nantalhala-Otter Creek Rd. Very scenic. Easy road.
I have driven NC 28 to Franklin. That is a snake of road. But supposedly good ride up to Tellico Gap. Google has StreetViewed the Tellico Road portion. Looks travelable but narrow one-lane in spots.

Just checked out the Google Earth street view, and the Otter Creek Road entry looks pretty easy. Thanks for the tip!
I've not driven there but crossed it over the weekend. There is a good bit of parking up there.
