Entertaining! Most important safety device is your cell phone and you should keep it on at all times, bringing a back-up battery if necessary.

Funny because I thought going where there is no cell phone service was one of the perks of hiking.

wow, i guess hiking was really incredibly dangerous prior to 2004 or so, huh? its a miracle all of you who thru'ed before then lived to tell us about it. no doubt you have amazing WWII like tales of the carnage that was the appalachian trail prior to the introduction of that most important safety device.

someone get me off this planet already.

Take aways from the video clip:

    1) Bug Spray, Sun Screen, First aid kit, Food, and water should "fill" your pack.

    2) A cellphone that is charged is your most important piece of gear.

    3) It's pronounced Appa-lay-shun even South of the Mason-Dixon line.

Meanwhile, its possible to run out of cell coverage 50+ miles before you reach the end of the road and the trailhead.

Just another case where people put too much dependence on technology instead of learning some wilderness skills. yea I know, just another old geezer.

My last foray on the AT was before cell phones were invented. That was also before the Kennebec canoe ferry, and the river was chest deep when I forded it (really slowly, after whittling on a sturdy pole to give it a good grip). I went on the trail assuming I was responsible for myself, not a potential burden to local public servants.

We can all give thanks that such independent thinking is being driven out of the citizenry's heads nowadays.

Additional items that you should carry:

    - Space emergency blanket

    - Signal mirror
    - Flare gun
    - Separate canisters of bear spray, pepper spray, and mace
    - Snake bite kit
    - Phone charger
    - Weather radio cube
    - Name tag
    - Change of underwear
    - Can of dehydrated water

Also, plan your trip so that you are off the trail and home before dark.

Exactly. I lived in Boone NC for 30 years and went to Appalachian State. Nobody ever said App-a-LAY-shun. It's App-a-latch-shun. Whenever I hear Appalaytion I know they're not from around here.

Agree. I'm not even an old geezer. I thought hiking the AT had something to do about self reliance not having an absolute need to call for help by cell ph.

It's a small club. I'm just a tourist, but I always try to fit in.
