I've never been bothered by bears, but there a re a few problem spots to be aware of, and plenty of instruction out there on how to avoid bear problems and/or problem bears.

The coyotes can creep me out when they're howling nearby and I'm out alone. Last week they were right in my camp, quiet as can be except for the sound of them trotting through the leaves on the forest floor.

Seriously, if you made it through the traffic to arrive at the trailhead, you've survived the most dangerous part of the trip. The rest is fear of the unknown. Coyotes may be spooky but harmless unless you are a rabbit. Bears are potentially dangerous but your odds of encountering ANY bear are small, and the odds of encountering a dangerousbear are vanishingly small, especially if you take reasonable precautions. Go, sleep in the woods. Get accustomed to it. Soon you will wonder why you were worried.

It seems I hear something every year about the wise shelter.

Ironic that a week later a bear showed up at the Wise Shelter in Mt Rogers because someone left food in the shelter. They still have a poster there reminding people to hang their bags.
