    Default Aluminum trowel

I bent this up out of 6061 20 gauge aluminum. Handle is 5", scoop is 4.25". Any smaller and the handle digs into your palm and or the scoop is not effective. Weighs 1.65 oz. and with the bends / folds its extremely rigid. Took about 3 hours to make...hey it was a slow day at work :-)

Pretty darn nice! Always a lot of satisfaction using something you made. Next slow day maybe bead blast and anodize red?!

Also the QiWiz trowels.... somewhat lighter in weight and a bit spendy. But they're titanium and should last a long time!

The handle design on Desertdave 's looks user friendly compared to the flat stock type on the others.

That's what I've wondered about with 'The Deuce of Spades' and 'QiWiz' trowels.

I currently use a Sea to Summit Aluminum Trowel. Even with a big round handle I frequently find it hard on the hands as I try to dig thru the mesh or roots I constantly encounter in GSMNP.

DIYselfers seem to do better at user friendly designs. :-)

The Duece of Spades (in the field) doesn't really have a handle... Many have found that holding the small handle works will in loose soil. However, holding the large end as a handle helps the small end dig into rocky - root soil more efficiently.

I have a Qiwiz Big Dig titanium trowel, and the handle edges tend to be somewhat sharp while using. I covered the outer edge of the handle with a narrow piece of Gorilla Tape, which is thick, heavy, and very tough.

It is now much easier on the hand.

I wonder how that flex seal would work as a grip on QiWiz trowels?
