    Default My tale of woe

    Hello to all!

It has been a long time since I posted since I have been hobbled for quite some time.

This is going to be a long post (thought I should warn you) but could use your help.

I had to undergo surgery on my left foot a year ago to repair bad foot bio metrics, and other fun stuff. I am beginning to to walk on some trails, and have been working with a former PT who is an atheletic trainer to regain range of motion, and strength. I have been out hiking 4-5 miles, no pack, on dirt sidewalks, will start with some elevation gains soon.

My surgery has left me with 2 different sized feet. The repaired one has larger volume to it than the right. There are other differences that I will not get into. It is very apparent to me that backpacking with the same size shoe on each feet will not work. So.................

    1) I can buy two pairs of the same boot, different sizes. Costly and wasteful
    2) I can get custom made boots..........

I have scanned the usual suspects for Hiking boot makers, and would appreciate any suggestions. I know custom made boots will be heavy waffle stompers. I will have to deal with that. Hell, I feel fortunate and lucky to backpack again.

Is there any (I think I already know the answer) production companies that would sell 2 boots of a different size?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any thoughts, or suggestions are welcome, even if I don't want to hear it. I always appreciate honesty.

I hope all are well, and are out enjoying the great outdoors!!!
    Thanks,
    misterfloyd
    BTW, I live in NC

Nordstrom has some hiking shoes and a different size shoe policy.

Limmer custom makes boots, may be able to help you out, but probably more expensive than just buying two pair of different sizes.

Many years ago I lost one boot from a brand new pair of Vasques. I contacted the company and asked if I could purchase just one boot. They immediately sent me the single boot I needed, no charge. My point is, it might be worthwhile to contact the manufacturers, find out if they are willing to help you out, I'm sure they all end up with odd left or right boots due to quality control issues. Worth an ask, all they can say is "no".

    misterfloyd,
We haven't talked since you first asked about foot specialists. I do hope that you are on your way to a full recovery.
Limmer boots are expensive and heavier than the youngsters like. The good news is that the boots can be resold two or three times. The bad news: You'll have to go to New Hampshire for fitting. It's pretty.

Thank you for your help and your input!

Every time that I asked a question in the past you have all come through.

Mister Krabs: Thank you for the link! I was not aware of these policies... hence the reason for the post. You are right, contact the manufacturers, and I may have to buy direct from them. You are right, all they can say is no.

Lyle: Limmers were the first company that immediately popped into my head. I like what I have heard about them except for the weight..... but may not have any choice

    Here is where I'm at:
I will never be able to wear a trail runner, just not in the cards.......at least now. I grew up with boots, wore them all this time, I just prefer them. I really want one w/o the goretex however. I want something that I do not have to make do with, if that makes any sense?.......one that actually fits right. Good fitters are a dying breed

My feet are pretty much the same length, but the volume, and width is different. Right now I have to lace my tennis shoes for volume on the left.

Venchka, recovery has been slow but steady. I have not strapped a pack on my back in a year. I will do some easy places with my son this summer, and cherry pick some of the places that I have been in Southern Appalachia.

Have been taking care of what I have and ready to make preparations for when they wear out.

If any others have any suggestions, please let me know. Would love to hear your thoughts and opinion as well.

    Best and thank you!

At least you are up and moving again. Congratulations on that.

Not sure if you can use it or not, didn't scroll into the web site, but a quick Bing search for "where to buy single boots" :

My other thought, if you can find the right fit:
Buy boots to fit your larger foot and have an orthotic made to take up space in the smaller boot. Might cost more than the Limmers.
No Gore-Tex boots are dwindling rapidly. Alico, Hanwag and maybe Zamberlain come to mind. There may be others.
    Good luck.

Thank you all for your help. I certainly appreciate it. You are right, it is hard to find non gore tex boots.
