    Default Trees/Sticks

    Hi everyone,
I'm planning on bringing a tarp for shelter on my CDT thru and was wondering if it would be foolish not to bring trekking poles for set up and just rely on finding sticks and trees to set it up. I have a trekking poles but detest using them. I find them very awkward to use but would bring them if I need them for tarp set up.

Lot of areas without trees - the NM desert, Great Basin in Wyoming, about anything over 10k in elevation (dunno if you enjoy sleep high up, I do)... if you are handy, sure, you could probably get by... but I'd save myself the headache for searching for something each night.

Agree. I'd get some simple shock-corded tent poles and not ever have to worry about finding sticks. Maybe you'll be setting up on a ridge in a windstorm with buckets of rain and you don't want to look for sticks?? Plus there may be times when no sticks are available.
