Default First AT NoBo of the year?

Uncle Tom and I were out on Mt Abraham in Maine over the past two days to do our "spring cleaning" trail maintenance, and we met a really early NoBo named Turkish at the Spaulding Mtn Lean-to. I'm amazed that anyone is this far north this early in the year, especially with the late winter conditions we've had up here. Just in the section Tom and I were on, the snow was still several feet deep in some places (and in others, the trail was flowing like a river).

He was at the Stratton Hostel last night, and will be taking a slackpack day today and a zero tomorrow if all goes according to plan. We met him at the White Wolf last night after he'd slogged through more snow and a raging Carrabassett River. Pretty rugged guy! I'm guessing there aren't any other NoBos ahead of him... that would be just crazy!

I met some NoBo at Springer last December. Last fall and winter were way too warm in the southeast.

Yep, the late cold up north and early warm down south probably contributed to many early NoBos.

I saw a FP post the other day of a thru hiker in Monson.

Jon (#6 at HF), who is in the East B Rd. vicinity today, started north January 18. I met him during his zero day in N. Woodstock.

Sounds like the guy in Monson who was asking about fords in the 100. I wonder how he got across the Kennebec? And the Whites, for that matter.

Last year 2 Nobos finished early May. 1 swam the Kennebec, the other got a ride.

He said he had gotten in touch with a local lady who was going to meet him with her boat. No fording for him. Aside from the craziness of being so early in the season, he seemed like a very level headed and reasonable guy :-)

And they are all ignoring the pleas of the volunteers that maintain the trails to please stay off during mud season.

I guess it's "the other guy" that does the damage.
