    Default Shorts

My holy grail of shorts WAS the Patagonia Nine Trails with the built in brief liner. Turns out they are no longer available. The choice now is either unlined or a long compression type liner which to me looks like a monkey-ass disaster waiting to happen. I tried a lot of shorts before I forked over the $$$ for my nine trails. They solved all chafe and funk problems. I need a second pair, but, alas, NO LONGER AVAILABLE with the brief liner.

    Why they ****ed-up a perfect a pair of shorts, I don't know.

I'm looking for suggestions for a replacement. Breathablility/ventilation and zippered pockets are musts.

    Evening,

This model mentions a mesh liner and zipper pockets:

Thanks but they are shown with a long liner and it looks like only the back pocket has a zipper.

Were these the shorts you had? Or, are these the newer version? http://www.patagonia.com/product/men...nch/57600.html

It doesn't list the liner under features, but does list it under materials.

If these are not the shorts you had...perhaps try Amazon, or any one of the outdoor sites that might be looking to move older product.

Those are the new ones, with the boxer brief liner:
    • Supportive and moisture-wicking polyester/spandex boxer-brief liner with Polygiene® permanent odor control provides chafe-free comfort

Amazon only offers through third party seller at $128.

For my thru I wore a pair of compression briefs with running shorts that had the liner ripped out. Never got a rash.

Compression undershorts and a kilt. Or you can skip the undershorts if you want.

The Patagonia Nine Trails Mens Shorts in a full range of sizes have been available at three different REI's I've recently visited.

Listed here currently available on the REI site for $65. I've seen the same 8" inseam shorts on racks in two different stores in that black color for less than that price though.

Those have the boxer-brief liner. I was looking for the old version with the brief liner.

These are what I use. Tie waist, all nylon/quick dry, mesh brief inside.

    Default Budget pick

Northern Tool has a line of clothing called Gravel Gear ... I got some quick-dry nylon ripstop shorts with front cargo pockets for about $20 a couple years ago.
Looks like they're only $17 now:

They're light, but they'd be even lighter without the built-in belt. I suppose you could cut it out ... not sure it does much.

Anyway, they work pretty well, dry fairly quickly. No built-in liner, though.

$17 seems right, but wonder how they'd hold up and would there be too much fabric?

They feel adequately tough to me, both fabric- and stitching-wise. As for too much fabric, well, these aren't running shorts. IMO the belt is the main superfluous weight/bulk. They already have elastic in the waistband ... no real need for a belt, esp. one that doesn't do much. Well, maybe if they were too big for you (or you lost a ton of weight hiking) the belt would be useful for something. Unfortunately, that's is not something I've experienced!

They look nice but I'd die in those on the trail.

I take it back. I'm sending these Nine Trails with the liner back. I put them on after work today and they are just too stuffy. I need max air down there.

Running shorts with a max of a 5" inseam. Pockets, we don't need no pockets.
