What goes in the zippered side pockets? I can't stand jazz in my pockets
This is the model with cargo pockets. Select tan color and the pockets are clearly shown.

Vuori Kore shorts, comparable to the Pat my goochy trail nines.
Termite fart so much they are responsible for 3% of global methane emissions.
Those have a 10" inseam. Kinda long for hiking unless you like that length(have a short stride, are on flats, whatever).
Patagoochi Strider Pro 5" inseam with cool max liner having 4 pockets two on the arse. The extra breathability is in the ventilation of a shorter inseam. That's why runners shorts have short inseams. They work well for backpacking. Combine that with going up a size and there's your ventilation.
The Vuori Trail Runner shorts with 7" inseam with built in Cool Max liner and two deep hip pockets having a low profile can be nice for hiking. They dry fast. https://www.rei.com/product/106628/v...-mens-7-inseam With the deeper pockets which are hard to find on short inseam running shorts you may not need zippers on pockets.
Typically, liners in shorts are much more breathable than underwear. Personally, I do lined shorts for hiking and a separate pair for sleeping.

Makes sense. I might have to try a pair of lined shorts. I do occasionally hike with base layer tights under my shorts in cold weather. It seems that with a liner that might not be the most comfortably thing, but I could always just forego the shorts and hike in only tights if needed.

Looks like a ghost thread came back to life. My go to pants are actually Columbia fly fishing pants with zip off legs and liners. https://www.columbia.com/mens-backca...or=028#start=1. The material is super durable. I buy two pairs at time and usually only carry one pair of the lower legs on trip. What normally wears out after a lot of use is the stitching. I have re-stitched a few over the years and got a couple of more years off of them. The zippers can be an issue if you don't make sure that the mating halves are lined up. The trade off is they don't have a fly so I have to unbuckle my hip belt.
