Meet the Octogenarian Who's Going to Break the Appalachian Trail Age Record
    Outside Magazine
It's one of the first lessons learned by the man who is currently trying to break the record of the oldest person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. His attempt began on March 14, and if Sanders (who will be 82 on June 14) is to be successful, he'll ...

I hope I'm still going when I'm 82. Best of luck to you, old man!

God bless him and I hope he makes it. It's nearing the end of April and so does anyone know where he is? Trail journal?

I like this quote: "I can handle cold. I can handle rain. But I can't handle them together . . ."

Well, he'd be off the trail by now if this were true.

I like his advice: Don't fall! So true as we get older.

25lb pack. Let's hope the fat shamers don't attack this number.

Call of nature? Was it a turtlehead or a pee stream? Did it in his tent vestibule a couple times. Welcome to the club.

Best quote: "Alone with nature and God and the universe." Amen, brother.

There's a link in the article that takes you to his website. http://www.greybeardadventurer.com/
Click on the "spot tracker" and you can find him near Hot Springs.

Edit: Near Sam's Gap. I'm blind.

According to his SPOT device he made it to Sams Gap today (April 19). That means he's covered 318.2 trail miles in the first 37 days of his thru-hike attempt. Since he started March 14 he has given himself seven months to finish and seems on a reasonable pace thus far given that a typical hiker covers more ground per day after their first month on the trail than they do in that first month.

Lately Greybeard seems to be micro-flip flopping a bit in Virginia with the goal of arriving at Damascus May 19 for Trail Days and hiking out of Damascus with a group. He is posting some videos and such on facebook but I haven't been able to follow the overall plan very well. As far as I can tell he's in good shape for getting to Maine.

Greybeard is doing well on his nobo "age-record" thru and is into Pennsylvania. My son and I day hiked over Three Ridges Wilderness along with him few weeks ago. He is quite talkative and a strong hiker; he claimed he was slackpacking that day because he carried all his camping gear but only one day's food.

Several times he has hitched forward and hiked south a few days while logging every step of the trail on his SPOT tracker. In this way he is seen by hikers multiple times and is unusually well known in the thru hiker community as we have discovered.

He's flipping to Maine about now to finish the thru sobo, planning to miss the colder season. I wish him well - I'm sure he's got this!

Yep, us old geezers can land the young ones once in awhile. But some of the young ones today are sooo high maintenance.

After hiking nobo from Springer in GA to Boiling Springs, PA, then flip flopping to Katahdin and finishing the 100m Wilderness sobo,
Greybeard the 82 year old thru hiker landed in the ER with mysterious internal bleeding. This is according to his FB page yesterday.
