True. But the one way rental from Denver to Durango could be cost effective relative to flying to Durango.
Flights to Denver can be silly cheap. Albuquerque is another flight and car rental option.

Thanks again for all the input and advise. I feel much more at ease about planning and taking this trip. Also I appreciate the thought about night time temps. With my current cold weather sleeping gear I am pretty comfortable into the low teens...

I am still at it. Putting the final details together for a mid September Hike. I will post an outline for advice and to make sure I am not overlooking something obvious. One of the last details is figuring out how to get from Twin Lakes back to Denver. What are my best options?

Start hiking at a fairly low elevation to help you acclimate. Drink, drink, drink - water, that is. It helps with headaches, nausea & such related to altitude. And what an earlier poster said about preparing for the cold. We had frost at 10,000 feet on July 1st. Here's a link to one shuttle back to the airport.

Pay someone to drive you to leadville
Take breck Summit Stage from leadville to frisco
    Catch commercial transfer to DIA
