    Default Sobo bubble?

Hey folks... I am trying to figure out a flip flop hike for this year. I am thinking of starting in southern Virginia in about a month and hiking north to Katahdin. This would put me in Maine around august. I will probably take a month or so off in my hometown in Virginia to make some money and then Sobo to springer and hike into the fall/leaf change.
I am wondering when the majority of Sobo thru hikers will be walking through Virginia?
I know it is going to be much more spread out than the nobo crowd.

There's not much of a sobo bubble. To the extent that it exists, it's pretty well spread out by Virginia.
I was on the trail between early August and late September one year, SOBO, between eastern PA and southern VA.
Two SOBO thru hikers passed me in six weeks' time. Both in SNP, the first week of September.
I have to guess they were the leading edge.
I had the trail and the shelters to myself most nights.

Here is a table showing when "typical" completing SOBO thru-hikers reach certain landmarks on their journey (both mean and median dates are given):

    Med. Date.....Mean Date..........Landmark
    June 23.............June 24..............Katahdin
    July 8................July 10...............Stratton
    July 20..............July 21................Gorham
    Aug. 1...............July 31...............Glencliff
    Aug. 21.............Aug. 23...............Kent
    Aug. 31.............Sept. 4................Delaware Water Gap
    Sept. 14............Sept. 20..............Harpers Ferry
    Sept. 24............Sept. 30..............Waynesboro
    Oct. 17..............Oct. 23...............Damascus
    Nov. 11.............Nov. 12...............Fontana
    Nov. 21.............Nov. 23...............Springer

So the highest concentration of SOBOs (though that's a very relative term ) would be in southern Virginia the first three weeks of October.
