I was a bit nervous about this too, but I just did a 55 miler in 2.5 days with my new/used Zero (small) with no belt. No belt=no problem. The shoulder straps fit me beautifully (I'm a size 44 chest - large shirt) and the little sternum strap kept the pack nice and snug and where it belonged. My base weight was around 5 lbs, I was probably at about 12 pounds with 2 liters of water and 2.5 days food.

With such a light load -- which is what a pack like this is made for -- there's no need for a belt.

By the way, I used the zippered pockets of my Nine Trails shorts for my phone and Aqua Mira -- the stuff I would keep in hip belt pockets on my GG Gorilla.

I know the point with this pack is to be minimalist but I wish this had a base strap like my Arc Zip.

The new pack has a hip belt.

    It can be removed.

from the website: Three belt positions allow you to move the webbing belt up or down to fit a range of torso heights. The included belt is 1" (2.5 cm) wide and has a maximum adjustment of about 50" (127 cm) circumference. The belt contributes 1.2 ounces (34 grams) to the total weight. It can be trimmed down or removed.

When you have to lug around a 25lb school bag every day without a hip belt, 10lb feels like a dream. It's all about what you're used to carrying, not what everyone else carries.

Yes, people and personal preferences are different.

I use a hip belt of some type on virtually everything. Even with very light loads—say 11-12lbs TPW—I sometimes like to do an easy jog on some flats or gentle downhills and a webbing hip belt keeps the pack from bouncing or flopping around.

With UL or SUL loads this really is totally HYOH and figure it out for yourself.
