I saw the squeeze for that price in a Walmart last week. The kit only included one 32 ounce bag. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

Last week I met people who had these on the Tanner Trail in the Grand Canyon, and they failed miserably filtering Colorado River water.

Hmmm first ive heard anything bad about them.
They are A pretty much go to filter for most hikers.

As would most any filter that didn't have an auto backflush. If you're going to be filtering silted water or muck you pull from bogs, it is a good idea to use a settling bucket or run it through a coffee filter first.

I've done the tanner trail, not a failure of the sawyer, there is so much silt in that river. i used coffee filters as a prefilter for the sawyer and it worked well.

Tanner is a great trail. Great advice on the pre-filter. This applies anywhere in the canyon.

Any particular reason you carried coffee filters instead of just using a clean bandana for the job?

This is a FS thread not a gear discussion.

the colorado is so muddy a bandana would only last a few uses before needing to be cleaned, coffee filters only worked a few times before they were spent as well. the colorado is incredibly silty especially near the confluence down the beamer. filters were easy and easily disposed of at the raft tour garbage caches along the way, i ended up using the conical style filters, would do again.

Shut up. It helps sell the filter anyway.

Just mentioned it FWIW. People with other more robust filters did not have issues with plugging. We used a Pur Hiker.
Plugging is a pretty serious issue when a river is your only water source... On some days the James, Potomac, Susquehanna run pretty brown as well, it depends on what is going on upstream.

I understand your reasoning. Mentioning it in a FS thread is not the spot to have the discussion.
