Default Weather North of Hot Springs?

Hey y'all, I'm heading down to Hot Springs to start a NoBo five week section in early April, and I'm trying to convince my friend (who is joining me for the beginning) that a 55 degree sleeping bag isn't enough in the mountains in April. Anyone know if there's an accurate way to check the weather in the mountains, and not just in nearby towns?

Still possible to get 20s and snow then. If your friend isn't going that far, you could check the long-range for a few spots before you go.

It's a sure thing that 55 is completely inadequate for your friend though

Hot Springs, North Carolina or Virginia? Either way, it doesn't really matter. The temps will only be slightly warmer in NC than VA. You're looking at at least a few nights in the low 20°'s with average lows around the low 40°. Pretty typical in any year to have a few cold nights 20° or so below the average monthly low temps as the data linked below illustrates. Snow is still a possibility, especially in VA at higher elevations. Not the low temps for April in every year. You'll definitely experience a few of those, and remember to adjust the low -3.5° for every 1000' in higher elevation from the elevation listed at the bottom of the page as well. It gets COLD in the mountains. Your friend will FREEZE his arse off with only a 55° bag.

I have to agree that a 55° bag is not going to work for your friend, but spend the first night close to the car so they can bail easily.

I know!! I wasn't concerned until recently- she and I were talking about temps and she said "but even if it gets chilly, this bag'll be fine, right?" Not if ya want to avoid hypothermia and get some actual sleep....

She's got a good attitude, but attitude is no where near enough to keep ya warm at night. :/

Rays Weather will get you NW North Carolina weather. Places in the 4500-6000+ will have a 10-20* colder temps than surrounding towns.

Always expect snow and freezing temps till mid April.

...and stronger winds than Ray predicts for Boone at 3,400'. Ray lives in Boone. The mountains make their own weather. Ray knows the mountains.
