    Default New Cathole Trowel

This weekend went to REI looking for a new trowel, for my upcoming section hike, this is what I bought, just under $3

It is a snow stake, does a quick job of digging, weighs next to nothing ( online specs say 1 oz.), and doubles as one of my tent stakes.
I would say it is about 1-1.25 inches wide, and about 9-10 inches long.

    thought I would share.

Yep. Got me one of them there cathole diggers in my stake bag right now. Titanium, too...weighs a third of that REI brick and only costs a buck more...just sayin...

But, seriously, it's a good multipurpose hack, if you've got that stake in your bag anyway...

Hang tough Bearleg. You have just purchased a genuine lightweight snow stake that can double as your trowel. There are those of us that believe a metal object works much better than a boot/shoe heel or a stick for digging a cathole, especially if you are in a hurry.

Well if are willing to spend that much, check out Qiwiz's titanium trowels. It is both lightweight and tough. You can find it here and he is giving 10% off right now until the end of March Madness.

Only kidding....I didn't mean to be an arse....I've actually used them on sand but in anything other than very soft soil they're a pita...

Guess I'm too old school. I tried a Ti trowel, the mid-size one, and went back to the cheapo plastic one. Commentary on trowels always seems to leave out using them "in anger". Any and all will work in ideal conditions, i e a litter box environment, but you'll rarely find such when the time comes in the woods. Too many roots and stones. YRMV of course.

I can't seem to get very deep with a plastic trowel. Three-deep and a big rock usually end up the best answer.

I've been using one for several years now and am quite happy with it as well.

I think he was more commenting on the fact that it was just the same item (stake) being used as a shovel. It's not you, it's just that it's a common enough occurrence.

The idea of discussing what one does with ones excrement in a public forum is one which needs to be discouraged. Instead why not stick to important and more genteel subjects like which shoelaces to use or " trekking pole straps; bane or benefit? My 6 yr old nephew talks about his poo constantly but jeeze! lol

I bought some snow stakes and used them as trowels in Georgia on a section hike.

I then got a duce of spades as a result of that experience.

    Maybe in non drought times...

    why?

    its a valid discussion.................

pooping is a normal thing, especially on a hike, and people like to follow LNT guidelines and what not...
