Meet the First Baby to Hike the Appalachian Trail
    Outside Magazine
But Bekah and Derrick Quirin, both 25, who will launch their bid to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail on March 20, think the timing is perfect. Twelve-month-old Ellie isn't walking yet, still loves to ride in the child backpack, and naps reliably for ...

This should be entertaining, as long as they don't make that baby actually hike. Has anyone got any ideas about diapers? It will be hard teaching that baby to poop in a hole in the ground.

I suspect they will not get far.

I would hate to find a baby inside a hiker box

When I become King I will issue a proclaimation that stories of epic adventure can only be written AFTER the fact.

This reminds me of a local news story a couple of years back about a hiker was was GONNA hike the AT. She gave all kinds of key advice about the challenges and what it takes to succeed. She quit before Neels Gap.

Yes, funny caption! I was excited to read about a baby who HAD hiked the AT; not so much about one whose parents PLANNED to...

The article says the trail is just ten minutes from their home in Greenville, SC. Did I read that right?

Since hiking is really just walking where it's okay to pee, does that means that toddlers are hiking wherever they go?

Very possible to make a go of it if they can handle the pack/baby weight and take their time. I would imagine they'll get tired of it long before they finish though

It is good that they're doing a flip/flop. Wouldn't want a baby in the bubble or forced to stay in a full shelter in the smokies (for everyone involved)

I wonder if this is the same idiot family I started this thread about.... Thru hiking with children

This is beyond stupid and most likely doomed to failure. Diapers? Formula? (I know, the breast is best. Your gonna have a hard time keeping a supply going on an extended hike) Medical attention?? (probably anti-vaxxers, so not a concern) Play time? Socialization?

I would rather read an article about the babies conceived on the AT.

The Family From the North hiked SOBO with a toddler. They were described in the Barefoot Sisters book, Southbound.

I hope they aren't going to stay in shelters. A crying baby in the middle of the night won't make them popular.

"Plus, she’s still breastfeeding six times a day, which means less food to carry. " Not a sign of clear thinking. Mom will eat ten times the dry weight to make that milk, compared to formula and whatever other food Ellie would eat.

Did NOBODY read the article cause, while your concerns have merit, the article actually addressed these issues "as they are planning to handle things." And some of you are just idiots. And NO, I would NOT attempt this with a 1 year old and I am pretty sure they will not complete the whole trek.
