This is what I am doing as well and so far so good, helps that I get a good discount on them.

My feet do well in Saucony Trail Runners. And their price is favorable compared to brands such as Asics.

Although they have a new model about once a year. I think they're up to TR10 now.

went thru 3 pairs of Inov8 Boots as a section hiker. . .although not made any more, still can be found by searching websites. loved the sole & the way the sole gripped, esp on rock, like wet rock.

unfortunately now i've developed metatarsalgia and need a whole lot more support in my hiking shoes.

Altra Lone Peak 3.0 ... just be careful to ease into zero drop style shoes. I learned the hard way and ended up with some mild plantar fasciitis.

Zero drops help some knees and hurt others.

I got knee issues from them.

    Shoes are so individual.

I agree on the Salomon xa pro 3d's. They've been my go to hiking shoe for a couple of years and they have been great.

After the knee problems from my Altras, I went to REI and started trying shoes.

the shoes are dramatically different on my feet.
Ihave to say the Altras felt so very good. But I needfunctional knees.

    Nice link, thanks.

I actually wear the Moab (non-waterproof) as my daily casual shoes. My last pair lasted me several years, far longer than any other brand I've bought recently.

The shoes I liked almost as much chafed my ankle. Was 1/4 not low enough.

I am trying a pair now. Will do 6-7 miles a day in them on vacation then try them with a thirty pound pack.

If they don't work, then back to REI they go.

But my knee is dramatically happier now.

I tried the Moab first and really wanted to like them.

The ones in the store were really stiff.

The thing that seems seems most important to me to extensively test are shoes.

    Proper shoes are a MUST!

For years, I went to outdoor stores, and they fitted me into hiking boots or shoes.... MAJOR MISTAKE!

Look at the attached picture to see what I dealt with every year. Please note: that picture was taken at miles 40.4 out of a 102.6 mile hike.... That was what I dealt with EVERY YEAR - moleskin, body glide, duct tape, changing socks frequently - nothing helped

I went to a RUNNING SHOE STORE - they spent an HOUR & a HALF with me - looking at my stride, my feet, etc. They determined that while I had wide feet, I needed a narrow toe box. I switched to TRAIL RUNNERS (Soloman) - and have not had any problems since. I HIKED 200 MILES last June - NO FOOT PROBLEMS!!!!

I'm just trying to find a running shoe store that sell more than Nike.

However, the latest shoes seem to be working out.

Just need to try them with a pack.

I have in the past had problems with both PF and knee fatigue. But so far the switch to Altra Lone Peaks has not been a problem for me. I hesitated getting them die to this potential, but now I wished I had switched sooner. I guess you won't know until you try.

I second BROOKS CASCADIA!! Buy a pair and stop there. Your only regret will be: what took me so long to make the switch?

I just bought a pair of New Balance Minimus today. I was psyched when I tried them on. Bought them. Put them on at home and wore for several hours. My feet hurt. I guess I'm going back to the store tomorrow.

Another vote for new balance, been using MT610's for awhile now, i also really like the fresh foam hierro, but the lack of traction on the latter makes it unsuitable for winter/slippery conditions.

    Most are junk
A collection of gimmicks, poorly designed

Figure out what you WANT, and 95% can be discounted immediately
There is no good mfg to trust.or model. They all produce same crap.

Occasionally they make something good, by sheer accident. Then. Discontinue it. Last years model x, is not this years, or the one from 3 yrs ago.

Most people are happy with things on their feet I would throw in trash. Its not that important really until miles per day starts climbing. Many a scout has hiked 7 miles in walmart work boots. But they cant hike 30 mpd in them.
