Please help me; maybe I'm missing something here ... but I just went to get these and they don't really seem to be "Free for Kindle." If I understand it, they are only available to read if you have a $9.99/month Amazon Kindle Unlimited subscription. Is that correct?

Not quite.

As perrymk says, "Most books are free for a limited time, then return to their previous price." He posted this book on 2/1. Most likely it went back to its regular price on 2/2, so you just didn't get there soon enough.
