    On a different note:
    After reading over some of the other responses, I'm now wondering if the title of this thread shouldn't have been more like...

    The age old question: Will my wife let me spend more money on camping gear?

    I have that one covered: I used to a fly small plane and ride motorcycles. Whenever she wonders about something on the credit card bill that was backpack related, my reply goes something like, "At least it is not as expensive as ..."

    I am the wife. And yes, actually, he just upgraded my rain gear and knife at Field and Stream. He's supportive.

    Why take just a tent or just a hammock? Carry both! Seriously, I ran across a guy last year who did just that. He said he was thru-hiking, but it took him six weeks to get to Gatlinburg and then he spent six days there getting drunk and stoned. His pack weighed at least 60 lbs. I forget his name, but he was from Patterson, NJ and had a really ugly tattoo on his calf.
