I don't go in the woods without a BLP. I call it my insurance policy. They are expensive but what it your life worth?

what is the resale of say a used 1st gen spot?

probably not much, and most of them were a novelty that saw little use

do a little leg work and you will have your cheap alternative

put an ad here for used gear wanted and bump it regular…..

Just go with a PLB. They're not cheap, but they don't require a subscription and are more reliable than trackers. Being able to summon rescue in the event of an emergency should be enough to give peace of mind to your family. Letting family track your GPS points can easily lead to paranoia. You can always send texts when in cell range. I am taking a FastFind PLB this year on my thru, but only because I will be starting my hike on the BMT where I will see very few hikers. The AT is a highway by comparison and it usually won't take long for another hiker to come along who can help out.

You know the OP has yet to come back to this thread... I was going to ask if they were male or female. If male should probably grow a pair and tell the family "I'm a big boy, I'll call every few days." and if a female should probably... put on her big girl panties and say "I'm a big girl, I'll call every few days.". It's not like people go missing, get raped, or are never seen again on the trail. Are you a foreign diplomats kid? Are you the presidents kid? If you're just a normal kid (sorry, 25 and under is still a kid IMO) you'll be fine out there.

true enough I suppose....but the subject of the thread is "low cost", and it might be the kind of thing that would ping whenever one happens to be hiking through an area with cell coverage and leave a spotty breadcrub trail ..... enough for folks back home to sortof keep tabs on a hiker's progress.... Kindof a set and forget thing....clip it to your pack and forget about it.
