Default Winter hiking pants to combat cold butt

Ive been out winter hiking a lot lately and while my layering system keeps most of me warm, one part that always seems to get chilly no matter how fast i move is my ass. i am wearing merino long johns and blend fabric REI hiking pants. I think i need different pants to help keep my butt warm. Anyone else have this problem? What pants (material) are generally considered good to use for winter (backpacking) trips.

I find a longer coat that covers my butt helps better than pants

I like to wear windproof cycling pants. They are incredibly warm and much cheaper than the mid to high end hiking pants.

A pair of Finnish army surplus wool pants does it for me from freezing to 20 F. 20 down to -10 F I add a light wool baselayer. No need for windpants unless its really blowin'! Cheap, effective and oh so stylin'!!
You don't mention it, wonder if there's any sitting/resting involved? Sitting on cold anything especially metal will suck heat right out of ya. Get a small closed cell pad or sit on your pack.

Very rarely do I stop for any breaks other than 2 or 3 minutes to re-adjust things. I like to keep moving to cover greater distances (once walked 9 hours straight). I do use a zSeat if I need to sit down for some reason though.

I like wearing shorts over my hiking merino wool.

If it is cold enough I wear ski pants, sometimes with shorts and merino wool underneath. If it is even colder than that, fleece pants under ski pants.

A longer coat is the traditional solution to this, and a good one, I might add. The problem with insulating pants is that they further restrict movement when the only temperature issue is the butt, not the rest of the body.

That being said, warmer long-johns (or something like cycling micro-fleece tights) might keep your whole lower body warmer including your butt, without further restricting movement. I find I like warmer long-johns/tights and then tune my temperature with upper body garments since they are easier to change than lower body garments.
    I'm not lost. I'm exploring.

I just got a neoprene 'butt' seat, something like 'hot buns' from a ski shop. It is designed for skiers and snowboarders sitting on wet or snowy and cold chairlift seats and sitting on the snow. It attaches around the waist and both thighs with velcro and covers only the butt and upper thighs with maybe 1/4 inch neoprene forming a good layer of insulation.

As I just got it recently I have only tried in is skiing with light rain and it does for that purpose work well.

Years ago surplus Air Force wool flight pants, with padded knees and butts were available. See if you can find some.

Have you considered that it is back sweat or butt sweat that is causing your cold arse?

Try a really lightweight wicking pair of boxer briefs...something like an ExOfficio Give-and-Go. If you are getting cold arse from sitting around...carry a z-seat pad...

I've got a lovely rubberized deployable arse flap for in-bounds skiing on powder days so your arse doesn't become soaked on the wet chair lift...learned that trick from Alta Ski Patrol....I suppose you could wear it INSIDE your pants...
