    Default hiking on the solstice

I would love to be on the trail for the solstice 11/21 (2 or 3 nights) NC. GA. TN. Linville gorge. Around 14-16 mpd, give or take. Any interest?

Wait a sec, aren't we supposed to hike naked on the solstice? You know, tradition.

I don't mind getting naked for the solstice. But I really enjoy my hiking threads on the trail

No bugs this time of year. Very few people on the trail....

Naked Solstice Hike, eh? Can I leave my hat on? And my socks?

They say you lose most of your heat through your head, so I guess a hat would be okay. Wouldn't want anyone to experience hypothermia. But socks? Wouldn't that be cheating?

Wouldn't it be more appropriate or poignant to a solstice hike at the arctic circle (or antarctic circle).
Good excuse for a trip to AK or Norway (or Scott Station)?

Hmm. Winter solstice a bit north or Fairbanks AK? Naked? Even for just an hour? . . . bad idea I think.
Hmm. Summer solstice a bit north of Fairbanks AK? In mid June? When the mosquitoes are at their peak? Where the state bird is the mosquito? Naked? . . . bad idea I think.

Okay, it sounded like a fun direction to go, but I think it's probably a really bad one.

P.S. I wonder if mosquitoes are an issue in December at Scott Station?
    I'm not lost. I'm exploring.

It actually isn't always the same day. Depending on the exact timing, sometimes it's on the 20th.
You know, that leap year 1/4 day variability thing with solstice being able to be either side of midnight between the 20th and 21st?

Jerry Nielsen wrote a book about her work as the doctor at the South Pole research station over winter. She described the 300 degree club where you set the sauna temp 300 higher than outside. Then you run naked (but with shoes) around the south pole marker from the sauna. As a doctor she said she had treat frostbite on all five appendages.
