Default Hiking in GA w smoke & fires?

My hiking club is supposed to hike Unicoi to Dicks Creek this weekend. That section is still open, but I know there is a fire within a few miles of there. Has anyone else hiked in the remaining open sections of the Georgia Appalachian Trail recently? How inhibitive is the smoke?

The winds are shifting the smoke daily. Hard to say.

Considering a section hike from N. GA up to Fontana Dam in late April. A little concerned about how burned out it will be in the areas that had forest fires. Not sure how much it will have recovered by late April. Any thoughts or ideas?

My guess is that by late April the burned areas will still be obvious but will be starting to "green" up from new growth. Look at it as an opportunity to learn about regrowth after a fire.

I'll be hiking a section north-bound from Dicks Creek in March, right through an area where a substantial wildfire burned. I'm excited to see the trail post-burn. It's an unusual circumstance and should make for an interesting hike.
