Unless it suddenly becomes a very wet winter and spring down south, this does not bode well for next years thru hikers.

Doing the Art Loeb Trail this week. Anyone know if I would be wasting my time due to smoke moving that way?

It's bad here in western NC. Passed thru the Nantahala Gorge today. The outdoor center (NOC) was completely closed down. The smoke was extremely thick and the small fires in the woods were clearly visible burning. Very sad. Prayers for all the firefighters and emergency response personnel.

This page generally is very up to date on fire situations. The maps are updated pretty frequently, usually daily for an active fire. You can search by state and it helps to know the fire's name.

The air is kind of hazy and it smells like a campfire. I was going to hike around Bent Creek (Pisgah Forest) today but decided not to. Down near Brevard (Davidson River end of Art Loeb) it still smells like a campfire and some haze earlier today. They have "air quality alerts" out for WNC.
They are doing evacuations near Lake Lure. From the pictures it is really burning over there.

I think they saved the restaurant. The article says it hopes to re-open this week, unless there is a more recent update that I'm not aware of.
