"Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a disorder that is characterized by a long-standing pattern of grandiosity (either in fantasy or actual behavior), an overwhelming need for admiration, and usually a complete lack of empathy toward others. People with this disorder often believe they are of primary importance in everybody’s life or to anyone they meet. While this pattern of behavior may be appropriate for a king in 16th Century England, it is generally considered inappropriate for most ordinary people today."

A friend of mine says he saw her come into Standing Bear Farm hostel, 3 miles north of Davenport Gap, around 9pm on 9/14, asking for the wifi password. She hung around outside shooting the bull with others til about 1130, talking about 45-50 miles days. Came into the bunk room, slept, left at 3:30am on 9/15. So that's 240 miles left and 3.5 days to do it. He said she didn't look like someone in the middle of a grueling endurance event.

Curiously, at 5:15am on 9/15 she posts a set of photos on her FB hike page, wtih Gatlinburg TN as the location. She tagged GSMNP but the phone put her at Gatlinburg. How accurate is that kind of tagging? I don't know. The AT swings west to within ~6 miles of G'burg at Mount LeConte. That's 210 out. So, 30 miles in 1hr 45 minutes? Very hard to do...on foot. It's 45 minutes by car to Gatlinburg...

New FB post - I know you were at Tumbling Run Shelters (mile 1116.8 SOBO) on August 30, 2016. You came in around 9:00pm using your headlamp.

So far that reads to me as:

    Day 1 – 8 246.8 miles to Andover– (30.85 mpd) 5th – 12th Aug 246.8 miles
    Day 9 – Zero Andover 13th Aug 246.8 miles
    Day 10 – 16 373.3 miles to Dalton (53.32 mpd) 14th – 20th Aug 620.1 miles
    Day 17 – 26 496.4 miles Tumbling Run Shelter (49.64 mpd) 21st – 30th Aug 1116.5 miles
    Day 27 – 35 526.1 miles Atkins (58.45 mpd) 31st Aug – 8th Sep 1642.6 miles
    Day 36 – 45 542.5 miles Springer Mt (54.25 mpd) 9th - 18th Sep 2185.1 miles

I don’t own an AWOL yet so mileage was taken from previous posts or FB posts.

Personally I have no idea of the terrain and how those figures read. I think the distance from day 10 -16 is incredible since it takes in the White Mountains with most of New Hampshire and Vermont.

To beat the other womans time by over 9 days seems incredible, since most improvements in times, where sport is concerned, happen in small increments when we are comparing the same sex.

    Day 42 – 45 237.9 miles Springer Mt (59.47 mpd) 15th - 18th Sep 2185.1 miles

The last distance was actually done in 3 days 6hours by her post so mpd would be higher.

Feel free to add, I have my opinion so no need for further posts.

I've not put in her Shenandoah dates/times. It seems like they've just geotagged her to the nearest towns, Waynesboro and Luray, whilst she was somewhere on Skyline.

FB will suggest a near-by location if it can't find something at your exact spot to reference.
    Here's a write up a I just saw posted to FB : https://gearjunkie.com/kaiha-bertoll...il-record-2016

It is difficult to believe her claims though. To follow that closely behind Karl and still fly under the radar?

In my experience, not very. When I've uploaded photos in GSMNP, both FB and Google have tended to suggest a nearby town. For photos around Mt. Cammerer, for example, both suggested Gatlinburg, and for photos at Gregory Bald and Parson Bald, both recommended Robbinsville, NC.

So I personally would not consider that evidence against her claim.

This is precisely what I'd been thinking. A severe need for attention, approbation, acceptance, admiration and approval will lead an individual into such a realm. She also looks to suffer greatly from self-pity, and I'm inclined to think she's made up many of her stories in order to meet the aforementioned needs. We all want to be desired and loved, no?

    Stephen Fry once wrote:

"Certainly the most destructive vice that a person can have...more than pride, which is supposedly the number one of the cardinal sins, is self pity. Self pity is the worst possible emotion anyone can have. And the most destructive. It is, to slightly paraphrase what Oscar Wilde said about hatred, and I think actually hatred's a subset of self pity and not the other way around - 'It destroys everything around it, except itself.'

Self pity will destroy relationships, it'll destroy anything that's good, it will fulfill all the prophecies it makes and leave only itself. And it's so simple to imagine that one is hard done by, and that things are unfair, and that one is underappreciated, and that if only one had had a chance at this, only one had had a chance at that, things would have gone better, you would be happier if only this, that one is unlucky. All those things. And some of them may well even be true. But, to pity oneself as a result of them is to do oneself an enormous disservice.

I think it's one of things we find unattractive about the American culture, a culture which I find mostly, extremely attractive, and I like Americans and I love being in America. But, just occasionally there will be some example of the absolutely ravening self pity that they are capable of, and you see it in their talk shows. It's an appalling spectacle, and it's so self destructive. I almost once wanted to publish a self help book saying 'How To Be Happy by Stephen Fry : Guaranteed success.' And people buy this huge book and it is all blank pages, and the first page would just say - 'Stop Feeling Sorry For Yourself - And you will be happy.' Use the rest of the book to write down your interesting thoughts and drawings, and that's what the book would be, and it would be true. And it sounds like 'Oh that's so simple,' because it's not simple to stop feeling sorry for yourself, it's bloody hard. Because we do feel sorry for ourselves; it's what Genesis is all about."

You might recognize that the Family Guy writers stole the blank self-help book idea and it was hilarious.

I feel somewhat sorry for this girl, and I recognize the behavior well.

Some of the mileage is skewed slightly because off time stamps. Pearisberg to Atkins was 90.8 miles, but she didn't do it in 2 full days since they're time stamped 40 hours apart. So she'd have done more than 45.4 miles that day, lowering the average for other days. However, Pearisberg to Springer is still 634.6 miles. The time stamp for Pearisberg is midnight, leaving 9 days 16 hours left which still means an average of over 66 miles. Her average up to Pearisberg was only 43 miles a day though. Quite the increase.

    From MrClahn, post #68:
    "26th Delaware Water Gap 16:42 896.1 68.8
    27th Hamburg PA 22:39 971.6 75.5 "

From what I've heard, the stretch from Hamburg (near Port Clinton) to DWG is what gives PA the nickname Rocksylvania. If she covered that 75.5 mile stretch in 30 hrs, it would be quite impressive.
136 contiguous miles of MD + rocky PA-AT down, but 2042 miles to go

Has anyone tried to compare her daily locations with Karl's daily locations to see if they actually would have crossed anywhere? To me, this would pose some light on the BS claims especially when he had some low mileage days. Just wondering.

Not very. I often have photos that want to be tagged for the a town that is miles away. It may not be the phone putting her at GB but FB making a determination on the file. That's not to defend her by any means.

Unbelievable! She really must be a beast. I figure in order to accomplish this she had to average about 50 mpd and 3.5 mph. I used the assumption that she slept 7 hours/day, needed about 2 hours/day to set up and break camp, fix meals, collect and filter water, and resupplied every 4 days with an average of about 4 hours per resupply. Did not factor in time for cigarette breaks. What I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around is how she was able to carry enough calories to sustain that kind of effort. Really, unbelievable.
