I plan on starting in early April as a flip-flopper. I haven't pinned down the exact location but somewhere in lower VA. My trail name, courtesy of my daughter, is COWG. I will be 66 and am from Omaha, NE though as a retired/disabled Army helicopter pilot I am from lots of places but originally from MN. Adventure and experiencing the awesomeness of this hike are what draws me in and hiking for others (Disabled Veterans of America, Children's Hospital of Nebraska, and the Sarcoma Foundation of America) is what I hope will sustain me during the tougher moments out on the Trail.

Good to see you getting out there. I was a UH-1 Huey CREWCHIEF for 10 years in the Army.

Same same, changed my date to have a second day off after flying from Australia. Will now start on the 13th. Thinking of shuttling up, on the 12th Sunday afternoon and getting an early start on the 13th. Staying in the Perimeter area, Dunwoody, Atlanta. REI store across the road for all the little things I'm not bringing such as esbit tabs.

Reading trail journals, people shuttling up on the day they start often don't start walking much before lunch time. I would hate to waste 1/2 a day. This way I will be able to get some good video at the start without hordes around, I hope. I may even stroll down the track a little bit and camp as I imagine there will be a crowd at Springer, from the map there looks like lots of likely places withing 200 - 500 metres the other side of the parking area.

The shelter at Springer is huge. Been there plenty of spots. Plus if you get there around noon you can still hike up to Springer and back down to Hawk Mt shelter by 4 or 5. It's only 8 miles and easy flat trail.

No trail names yet, definitely excited to acquire one naturally.
    Northbound
Tentative start date is between February 17th-23rd (as soon as the weathers "good")
    Definitely doing the approach

The last thru-hike me and my partner went on was the South West Coast Path in England two summers ago. We are so excited to be heading back to the trail. If you want to follow our progress we created a website for this time around! Hopefully we will see some of you on the trail!

    Default 2017 Thru-Hike Registry

For those who are trying to register their start date with appalachiantrail.org it looks like you will be able to beginning November 24th.

Here is a note that I received from Tenny and am posting with his permission.

    "Gary,

I spoke with the director of southern regional office of the ATC, who is orchestrating the registration system. Looks like it will be live by November 24th--Gobble, gobble :-) Our website now reflects this change.

There was a loophole in the 2016 version that allowed hikers to register their 2017 hikes as a 'flip flop thru-hike starting from a location other than Harpers Ferry.' Unfortunately, these folks will have to re-register their hikes when the 2017 system is live.

    Thanks Gary,

    Tenny"
