We have set an official date now.

if one is setting out on a journey such as the AT, whats another 8 miles ? i know it isn't part of the trail, but in a way it is. but like i said, whats 8 more miles. if people are worried about doing 8 additional miles they may want to rethink there thru hike...personel opinion i guess

My thinking is the same as yours, Drew33. I wasn't aware that folks didn't include it as part of the hike. It's like a staple of the trail, like a merit badge, I guess. I've hiked the approach trail and sectioned hiked the TN/GA section of the BMT. We hiked the approach trail to do a shake down before hiking the BMT. I've heard people say it's a gage as to whether or not you can/could complete the thru-hike. Doubt that's a fact though as I didn't find it that difficult. Where do those that don't take the approach trail start from, FS 42? Good luck on your hike!
