Why is it important to state whether your doing the approach trail or not. For noobs who haven't learned how to "Hike your own Hike" it seems to just cause a bunch of arguing and peeing contest. What do y'all think?

I think they just use it for statistics or some such stuff. I'm coming to hike the AT, Springer to Katahdin, so no approach trail, except for the .9 mile to get to the start from the car park. I'm sure I will get the pleasure of walking many additional miles that don't count during the walk. Thinking on it I might actually keep a log just to see how much extra I walk on blue blaze trails to points of interest, shelters, deli's etc. and getting to towns.

@jjozgrunt Yes that is a good point. And some of those blue blazes to p.o.i. are really really really worth the .3 whatever. Dismal Creek Falls is a prime example, at least the year I hiked. It's in southern Va. S of Parisburg on the trail of my memory serves me right. I zeroed there last time after a 32 mile day to get there. (8 in my only night hike)
