well, from Google...
(5th definition of 'pitch' as verb)
set up and fix in a definite position.
"we pitched camp for the night"
synonyms: put up, set up, erect, raise, position, fix in position, place, locate; set up camp
"they pitched their tents for the night"
Pitch would seem to be the better choice as 'erect' means to construct, and I think the definition above seems a better fit. But then, "erecting" is a common use, so I don't know why it would be funny to anyone but a goofy kid. And I want to be clear that I don't think there's anything wrong with being a goofy kid.

If not impeding on another's ability to access fair amount of shelter space per # of occupants... Who cares... Ettisquite schmedicate…
Like complaining about somebody taking 2 parking spots in the empty area of the parking lot at Walmart.
Easy - because you never know who will come in after you in the night.
double post.
You know to be courteous to others on the trail, right? In this case, that courtesy includes not taking up extra space in the shelter by setting up a redundant shelter inside.

Ughh, I hate people that do that. I could blindfold myself and likely get pretty close to being in the lines, its just not that hard. And why would I want to potentially make myself a target of others' ire? I don't know who cares, but I don't want to find out.
(Knowing that tents aren't supposed to be set up inside shelters)
If you've always stopped mid-afternoon to setup camp, and never seen someone come in late to camp, then I suppose you might figure there's always plenty of time to make rearrangements if someones comes in after you. If you've ever hiked late and come in to the shelter later than expected, dwindling or no light, have to make dinner in the dark and you're already starving and just want to eat and go to sleep and certainly don't want to deal with conflicts or drama... then it comes to you.

these people are commonly known as "a holes"....
i would suppose the same for this circumstance as well....
I heard different school of thoughts on tenting inside the shelter. The ATC has no rules against it, so I am not going to police it if I see one, unless, they are taking up so much room to be disrespectful to other hikers. During the "bubble" season, the shelters get pretty packed in. I personally don't like shelters, even if there is no one there. I much rather prefer a tent site. The only exception to the rule is the GSMNP where all hikers are required to stay in the shelters. Thru-hikers are exempt from making a reservation, BUT they also must give up their spot to other non-thru-hikers. I have heard grumblings from other thru-hikers about this "inconvenience" especially when they are fast asleep and woken up by another hiker who arrived late at the shelter. I don't know the benefit of putting up a tent inside the shelter to help with the mice situation because mice will chew through anything, even sleeping quits and bags. Mice will even visit tent spots. Mice have weird chewing habits. They will chew through plastic, foil, paper, cloth, etc.
They may not have rules against it, but they have published an opinion in their quarterly magazine, Journeys, and not too long ago either. Of course they cite the poor hiker etiquette of setting up a tent in a shelter. As mentioned numerous times in this thread, you never know who is coming into the shelter behind you. I would say about 33% of the time I spent in shelters, someone came in after 7 PM.
That's why I put the statement, "Unless, they are taking up so much room to be disrespectful to other hikers." As you stated the quarterly mag published is an "opinion." IF the ATC wants to put it in their guidelines for EVERYONE that does not get the quarterly mag, even if it's their "opinion," they should do so, share it on their website. There are certain matters I do police, i.e. "pack out your own trash" and "keep your dog on a leash" near the shelters and the people and wildlife and "Leave nature intact," don't be digging up ramps, even if it looks good for supper. Foraging means cutting it a certain way so it regrows and is viable, etc. I also added that during the "bubble" season the shelters could also be packed in. If other hikers start to police every little thing that bothers them, I just don't think that is conducive to a good "mindset" as a hiker. For that reason, I just rather find a good tent site and have my alone time. You are dealing with a lot of cultures on the trail. People come from all different backgrounds. Some are more INTUNE with what is APPROPRIATE and others are totally CLUELESS. My grandparents taught me to pick my line...or "fight" and don't get caught up in the minutia of every day angst. I just don't have those kind of "hangups."
I use shelters. My choice. My hike. Whatever if you don't. It happens that tents get pitched in shelters. I'd rather be in a shelter as most every square inch of a flat tent site has been used as a toilet. I'll take mice in a shelter over pitching a tent on buried turds and the smell of piss. You do what you want.
Just plain false statements. Problems with this:
There arent "turds" everywhere. Its not like its an easter egg hunt for turds....
Mice piss and leave turds are all over the shelters. You cool with that?
Please, Keep using the shelters. More tent space for us turd dwellers

Just plain naive statements. Problems with this. Many shelters have minimal flat ground. Since the first tent got pitched in one of the sites available in a non stealth location people have craped and pissed on the ground in that area. it's not a stretch that people use the area as a toilet in established tent spots. Mouse lovin', shelter livin', leanto lovers have been known to bail out of the shelter to pee and do out bidness. You think the ground is turd and pee free go for it. I can sweep before sleep. You do you and dont worry about me.
