    Default October Section-hike

Sectioning from Humpback (855.2) to Gravel Springs Gap (956.2) towards the end of October. Planning on 6.5 days humping. How is the parking at Gravel Springs for six days? What I'd really like to know is it possible to send a "mail-drop" to Lewis Mountain Campground Store??? That is approximately our halfway point. If not.... any other suggestions for a mail drop? I'm not into hitching into towns or PO's and prefer to stay near the Trail.

You will not be able to send a mail drop to Lewis Mountain store. Really no way to easily do mail drops in the Shenandoah Park.

However, that is a great time to hike in Shenandoah.
No crowds, cool temps, fall colors, no bugs... do it!
If necessary, maybe you could leave a stash drop somewhere.

Thanks for the response.... just have to hump with six days of food.... no biggie, done it many times but have also had good success with maildrops, saving me 5/6 lbs the first few days. We all know five/six pounds makes a substantial difference. A stash drop is interesting... not sure if it is worth the risk/reward. If you've ever read "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" published in the early 70's about those "few" hardy individuals who thur-hike during the late 60's/early 70's , it seems many of them travelled along the AT and buried their food cache.... and it worked for them.
