    Default MRE Question

I just found 6 MRE's in my old Civil War reenactment box-they are probably over 25-30 years old.
    Would these still be eatable?

Those weren't edible when they were "fresh"

I'd try them but I'd try just about anything.

As I recall, the official life span of an MRE is 7 years. At 25 years? I wouldn't eat it, and my standards are pretty low.

If I were starving to death I could chance it. You would be wise to not use the normal heat and serve method and opt for about 250 degrees for 5 minutes. The chemistry of the goop you are eating can be expected to change in 30 years. Feed some to the dog first and see what happens.

I wouldnt feed it to my dog, even, although Cadillac foods was one of the contractors of MRE's back then, and they did make dog food...

That's about the life span of them under perfect storage conditions. There a few YouTube channels in which they open MRE's about that age and older. It ain't pretty! You can also reference the code on the package and it will give you the expected experation for that particular meal.

Edible yes. palatable it depends on how hungry you are. GIven the way they are prepared and packaged I don't think they will ever spoil due to bacteria

Reminds me of folks in remote arctic areas carrying dog food in the back of their vehicle. In pinch they could eat it but would have to be real desperate to do so.

If you eat them let us know how it goes Otherwise there might be some weird experimental market for them on ebay.

Um, no. I wouldn't take the chance. Eat an MNRE from when I was in basic training? Hell no. Write them off as a loss.

Yes. The only answer to the MRE question is: No.

If you want to reenact some civil war stomach ailments (diarrhea, etc) then a couple of those should help you get ready.

I threw them away-it wasn't a big money loss as I brought them so long ago
It amazes me at the prices on them at this time.
You almost have to sell a kidney to buy one.
