Every time I hear a story like this I always ask myself "how do they know they got "thee" bear"
well.....
they are matching tooth bites and DNA samples..........
Did they determine if the hiker had food in his tent?
From what the PIO has told us (and this was after the incident the other day)--"he hung his bag in the cables"...
I did not interview the PIO so I cannot verify what she meant by this...
i may call her to clarify....
The web article indicates they stored their food properly, hard to say if it was all the odoriferous items.
Large, old, male black bears have been known to have predatory tendencies. Might be why they chose to euthanize with out 100% clear evidence.
I read that the acorn crop last fall was smaller than normal, hence hungrier than normal spring bears.
It I would be interesting to hear the biologist's opinions.
Just what we need, bear phobia in an election year
Sounds like a case of a dominate male wanting more than blueberries or freakin' pasta/rice and snickers bars
Some cannibals claim human meat tastes like pig. http://listverse.com/2015/07/01/10-r...eal-cannibals/
I didn't have a chance to call about the food issue today---I hope to do it tomorrow...
i talked to the PIO this morning and according to her-----she looked at the inventory list of what the guy had in his tent.......
no food (it was hung in cables).......but gear...
the only questionable item was sunscreen lotion......
Some people seem to have a hard time accepting the fact that black bears are predators, granted they won't be making the top ten list of extreme and scary predators, but they are predators; an animal doesn't have to be a carnivore to be a predator.
Add to that, that we are seeing a huge increase in wildlife numbers across the board, thanks to our efforts in conservation, we're starting to see the pay offs and the consequences.
I camped at Spence Sunday and this happened on Tuesday night. Talked to one guy who did first aid (Frosty.) It was one of those coconut scented suntan lotions. -- Proton
Wow, pretty bad choice in a high density bear population area. I guess Honey Comb was sold out.
I wouldn't place the blame though, on him having sunscreen lotion in his tent...
the blame would be the thousands of other people who carelessly did not store their food beforehand...
after all, bears around shelters know that a brightly colored object could potentially be a meal....
Yeah, the policy to concentrate camper's campgrounds within a dense bear population creates a high potential for interactions between bears and people. If the hiker's report is true, it does emphasis the need to control all scented items.
My wife is addicted to chapstick, so I damn near have to strip search her before going to sleep as she'll have 2 or 3 tubes with her.
