Exclamation Parking at the RPH Shelter ACCESS ISSUES

All; The parking situation at the RPH Shelter is currently experiencing access issues due to the land owner that the lot actually sits upon. Over the last few days he has been filling in the lot with boulders and stones to prevent parking on his property. This is the pulloff lot on the left is adjacent to the trail proper on Hortontown Rd. that has been in use for 20+ years.

Local maintainers have been talking to him the last two days, the ATC has been notified, the town knows what he is doing already too.

The biggest reason apparently is that there has been an uptick in drug use in the area, police have stepped up patrols, but the locals are doing this.

For the short time, please be careful about parking at the RPH Shelter, an alternative if you need to park in that area is to use Fahnestock SP or another trailhead if there is no available space at RPH.

Until the powers that be work out the situation, being the better neighbor will be our best action.

Any idea how this affects the RPH work party in July?

Tim already has a parking plan set up so there will be no issues in July.

Question for both those needing to be in that area (for the info) and for those more familiar (to hopefully provide the info):

We ended a hike several years back where the Parkway crosses the AT, which is only a couple tenths of a mile from this shelter, due to a change in plans.

While we were waiting for our ride, there were a number of people using the area under the parkway bridges as a park and ride pickup/drop off point.

What I do not remember is there was any signage in that area prohibiting parking on a longer term at that point? If that was allowed it would be a good close spot to the shelter.

OK - just a hopeful thought (and it's been a few years since we did that hike so not surprising that things could change).
