Default Familiar with campsite 4.3 mi sout of Fontana Dam?

We will start our ~30 mile section hike at Fontana Dam to NOC in about 3 weeks. In our party will be my 83 year old father in law, so I'd like our first day to be light. It's a steep climb for ~5 miles from the dam. According to the data book, there is a campsite 4.3 mi. south of the dam, which seems like a good place to spend our first night. Is anybody familiar with this site? What's it like... water? Table? etc.... We'll be hammocking.

    thanks!

Dont think you will find many tables except at shelters.

Campsites are usually just wide spots off trail where others have tented before and its obvious. There are a few tent pads built where ground isnt flat. But generally, expect no improvements.

Are you thinking of Cable Gap shelter/campsite? If so, there's usually water from a small stream in front of the shelter. The trail crosses the stream. There is not a table, but there is a privy. You should be able to find hammock spots, but they may be spread out a bit.

No, I think Cable Gap Shelter is 7.5 miles from the dam. If we get to the alleged 'campsite' at 4.3 and still have plenty of gas left, we may be able to make it to Cable Gap. Good to know there's a privy there. I just noticed that the data book does say there's water there at the 4.3 campsite... with the symbol "Cw", which i believe means Camping and water.

    thanks!
