I'm so confused, I'm not sure if I lost my horse or found a rope.

    See---
A Donner Party member murdered two people for use as food.

During the “Forlorn Hope” expedition, the hiking party included a pair of Indians named Salvador and Luis, both of whom had joined up with the Donner emigrants shortly before they became snowbound. The natives were the only members of the group who refused to engage in cannibalism, and they later ran off out of fear that they might be murdered once the others ran out of meat. When the duo was found days later, exhausted and lying in the snow, an emigrant named William Foster shot both of them in the head. The Indians were then butchered and eaten by the hikers. It was the only time during the entire winter that people were murdered for use as food.

    Also this from Wiki timeline---

January 9, 1847: Snowshoers: About this time, the surviving snowshoers come upon Luis and Salvador, lying exhausted and near death. William Foster shoots them; their bodies provide food for their erstwhile companions.

Back in December 2003 I pulled a long backpacking trip and got stuck in a butt cold rain for 4 days at one spot near Citico Creek in TN and luckily brought this book to kill the time---

Ever after this campsite has become known as the Donner Camps.

Ok, now it's more clear how this is related to "how to eat your hiking partner" read more:

How did the facts in the book you read match up with the facts given in the above link?

Your four days of rain gave you time to think about the hard times early pioneers had.

It was interesting to read that they ate the leather from their saddles. (horse hide jerky)

Worst possible scenario. Now, you're ALONE with no helpful defenders to ........uh, defend you. Plus, with partners, you can always run FASTER than your partners, circling back to take advantage of the leavings after the "unfortunate incident".
