Default Weather on Springer in mid April

Good evening folks, this being my first real hike i've got several questions, the most important being the weather from Springer north to NC. We are looking at leaving in mid April and while I understand that we must prepare for the worse case scenario, i'd like to hear from some veteran hikers and their experiences regarding what to expect? any tips would be useful such as sleeping bag rating? Thermals? Thanks in advance!

Bring a 20 degree bag. You will be at elevation. Bring long underwear too.

I thruhiked the AT twice, both times starting around April 1. On both hikes, I had snow. In 1992, it snowed in mid-May, in 1988 it was mid-April. Sub-freezing nights are always possible that time of year. When crossing some of the NC balds, the wind can be freezing.

Plan on the possibility of low 20s. But it can also be quite warm with highs in the mid to upper 70s. You just have to be ready for most everything, including hiking through snow and getting sunburned.

Lived and hiked in North GA for 20. Weather can be wild in April.

As FatMan said...SUNBURN! No leaf cover at that time of year. If you get a cloudless day,you will get sunburned. Bring some sunscreen if you burn easily.

A few years ago I hiked from Amicalola to Hot Springs leaving 4/9 and finishing 5/1. See trailjournals if you are interested in the details. No snow, but some below-freezing temps on some nights. Mid-20's was probably the coldest it got. Would take a kit that allows you to be comfortable to 20 degrees and you should be fine. Have a broad-brimmed hat or sunscreen as well.

Anywhere from 80F down to 20F. Those are the extremes I hit in four days between AFSP and Neel Gap.
