I am going to plan c since permits have not yet been granted. I am applying for a permit for Happy Isles to LYV Pass through with an exit of Yosemite at Isberg pass. I will continue on the Thousand Lakes Trail and rejoin the JMT after Donahue Pass. My permit request says exit at Whitney Portal. Will I need another permit for the Ansel Adams Wilderness?

    You wont need another permit
You will compete with others for a popular first night permit anyway. May have better luck thru a different trailhead.

Flip flop out of mammoth was great in all respects especially the ease of permitting, Resupply etc...

Salty, didn't you fly to or near to Mammoth? What airline and airport did you use? I'm aiming to acclimatize in either Mammoth or Tuolumne Meadows before starting the jmt.

I finally got a permit leaving from Mono Meadows (off Glacier Point Road) (to Illouette Basin to Merced Lakes Pass to Red Peak Pass to Isberg Pass to Hemlock Crossing) to JMT at Devil's Postpile. I've pieced together the route from 2 National Geographic maps but have a bit missing after Isberg Pass in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Has anyone hiked the route and have a trail description or map?

Ruby, I recently purchased the Wenk data book and detailed JMT maps in preparation for my JMT thru-hike this September. PM me if you'd like info on something specific.

I hiked this route last year. If you're looking for GPS tracks or PDF maps (made from Caltopo), I have both which I can share. Also Sierra Mapper was a huge resource for me.

    Hi Kerosene and KidA24,

    Kerosene,
I have the Wenk book also but I'm not starting on the JMT. We won't return to JMT until Devil's Postpile.
    Kid,
Thanks so much for sharing your map and your blog. Great blog! How do I access your blog after day 3? I've figured out the distance from 2 paper maps I possess, except for the distance between 10,005 Lakes (somewhere near Isberg pass) to the Stevenson Trail. Do you have the info?

I actually haven't written anything beyond day 4 yet and need to go back and link just the JMT blogs themselves, but you can browse to the other ones through the blog link at the top.

I can't recall for sure, but I believe the Stevenson trail is at Hemlock Crossing and the distance from Isberg Pass to Hemlock Crossing was about 16 miles, plus another 2 or so from the tarns west of Isberg Pass (10005 lakes).

Start at Cottonwood Lakes trailhead, A few more miles, that would make most have to resupply though before MTR.

Who wants to hike it? 160 slots right here in late july ............for the taking.

    Alright....
This could be my plan B. My JMT maps don't go that far south; how many miles is from cottonwoods trailhead to the JMT and what permit would I need to finish at Happy Isle? Overnight visiting MT Whitney?

It's around 20 miles to Crabtree depending which trail you take. You can see the route and how to get a permit here: http://hikingthejmt.com/nobo/
