But that doesn't seem very many miles for him to make after 8:45 AM. I wonder if he is going to take a "day off" and then do GSMNP in one day (so he doesn't have to camp)?
Looks like you might be right. I was thinking he would try to make Cosby Knob Shelter, where his crew could come up from Cosby Campground to meet him. 69.6 miles tomorrow must seem like a better option to him than another sleepless night on the trail.

Update on Day 39 from a few days ago. Came up a bit short. Otherwise, no specifics.

I doubt he'll push through the Smokies in one shot. He'll probably take a catnap at Newfound Gap or the Clingman's Dome road.

Yar seems a poor time for Russian Roulette.

As far as I'm concerned, the record will only count if Belz and Karl Sr. play a round of Hillbilly Golf in Gatlinburg while Karl and Scott are in the park.

That SCAR time is a stout one. 5mph over that section for 15 hours is pretty amazing.

So does Jenny Jurek have 72 hours to produce her receipt or risk invalidating Scott's record?

Either way, guessing neither crew can post up enough hot tub time stamps to retain the title.

That record is bogus. It was bogus the minute they got out of the park.

    I knew it

I will contact Bakwin immediately and get him to remove the bold name and movie it down to the general "accomplishments of note" section next to Joey Camps.

Alas, many a NOBO dreamer has been laid low by the sweet promises of Gatlinburg down the mountain.

Or I'll let Karl take care of it in a few days maybe.

Could you imagine going out for a day hike, three people moving fast on the trail come by, and your realize it is Karl Meltzer, Scott Jurek and Dave Horton hiking/running together?

Is Champagne allowed on Springer? And, will there be a large welcoming party as was the spectacle on Katahdin?

Everybody take a step back from WB.net and look around for a minute. Those 3 men are not famous and no, there won't be a large welcoming party.

Would some people recognize them? Sure, but most would just think, "Wow, those guys are skinny."

Will there be some people at Springer? Sure, but will it be more than the number of people attending a midget football game in any town in America? No.

Another Update. On day 40 he did 47.3 miles. This after coming up "a little short of plan" on day 39. Based on the road crossing locations and mileages, I'm speculating that on day 39 he did 48.1 miles to get to Carvers Gap. From there, 47.3 miles would put him at about Spivey Gap at the end of day 40. He says he "will head toward Hot Springs tomorrow" i.e. day 41. That would be a 57.4 mile day if he made it from Spivey Gap (that would be a big day). If Spivey Gap was correct, he would have needed 52 MPD at that point.

Hot Springs to Springer is about 270 miles IIRC.
48 MPD average (assuming some loss in Smokies and good progress elsewhere) by five regular days- 240 miles leaves him 30 short.

Pick up 5 hours by not sleeping by 3.0 MPH= 15 miles

And record is 8h and 7 min past the last full day... so even a decent zombie shuffle for the final 7.5 hours at 2 mph puts him a whopping 37 minutes faster.

Right about there.... Best of Luck Karl!

A friend in NC said that Karl passed Newfound Gap sometime before 6:00 pm today
    Wednesday Sept 14/day 43.

That's only 30 miles, with Clingman's Dome still to come.
