    Default Water Sources -FT

We did a section on the Suwannee and tried using Aqua-Mira drops to purify river water (tannic). Even after 2 doses it was still slightly tannic in color.

Other than resupplies in town what are you guys/gals doing for water on the trail?

    Thanks in advance

Tannic acid has many health benefits.

I doubt double dosage of Aqua-Mira is as healthy.

The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.

Tannic acid is one type of tannin which are plant polyphenols some of which have health benefits. I drank untreated "iced tea" - Tannin stained water from the Pine Barrens - for more than 15 yrs without ever becoming sick from the water.

I'm not 100% positive but I'd strongly surmise tannic acid is not what AM Drops is designed to remove.

Thanks for the feedback. We have tried using a Sawyer mini before and it does not remove the tannic it.

Generally, the only way to truly "remove" tannins is by evaporation and condensation. That being said, as long as you run the water through a .1 micron filter, it will be perfectly safe to drink. The tannins wont kill you.

Actually it is not the tannin that I worry about in the Suwanee River. Chemicals like phosphates and heavy metals can't be removed except by distillation. Several years ago I was with a group that walked 1-1/2 miles off the FTA along the Suwanee to a farm house where the owner let us use his outdoor hose bib. Some in my group were concerned about the quality of the river water and at least 1 or 2 people filtered and drank it without any short term affects. Even on the AT, I've had to filter discolored water that the filter could not clear up, so I agree with the others that the tannins are not an issue.
