    Default Hurricane Mountain Shelter

I viisted this new shelter with Almost There about 2 weeks ago in my Pre Thanksgiving Day hike. Very nice area, with good water accross the AT from the shelter. I did not notice a privy. Very large and ample space.

Is this shelter near the top of Iron Mtn? If so, it seems a little close to Old Orchard shelter. Any privy?

The shelter has a moldering privy.

Located at the center of the map.

Can anyone tell me the distance from the Old Orchard Shelter to this one? I am doing a section hike but have old maps and guidebook - and living in remote AK no access to new ones before my trip. Thanks!!!!

If I was planning a winter hike I'd keep on going North to Trimpi Shelter. I believe it's 8 miles north and it has a fire place.

Trimpi is 9.1 miles north of Hurricane Mtn. - when I was there last year the spring was rather slow

I haven't seen any bear cables between Damascus and Burke's Garden. Bring your own rope if you hang your food. That is what I do.

There are no tent sites right around this shelter, but at the point the side trail leaves the AT for the shelter there is room for a few tents (it's real close to the water source for this shelter). Maybe a tenth of a mile to the south on the trail there is a site for another tent or two -- that's where I tented in May 2017.
