    Default Homemade Whisk

I did several days in Georgia and chose not to cook. I'm going to be doing a section in NC and this time I've decided to make and bring meals. Today I did a test run of some of the dehydrated foods and found that I'm most likely going to need a whisk to get the lumps out.

Any homemade options that might work? I weighed three whisks I own and all are around half a pound.

You can get small plastic and metal whisks at the dollar store. Check around.

OK. I just pulled 3 full whisks out and weighed them. 2.5 to 4 ounces. Your half pound whisks are too heavy even at home.
One of these is probably light enough for backpacking. It may not do the job you require.

I just smoosh the lumps inside the bag before adding water, then again after adding the water to make sure everything gets wet.

Of all of the "needed" equipment that I have seen or heard of on the trail, this has to rank high on this list of "gear that you could forget and still make due." BUT if I see you on the trail whipping up some scrambled eggs for omelets, can I have one?

Lol - yes, scrambled eggs (and bacon too) for all!

    Thanks for the tips!

Hey there, new member of the forum here to resurrect old threads! For anyone who hates lumpy milk or whatever and is looking for an ultralight whisk, I've found that the ball-whisks that come in a Blender Bottle work as well or better than any whisk I've ever used -- in any setting. They're 2 1/8" in diameter, pack flat (1/8"), and weigh .55 ounces.

To use one requires a watertight, preferably hard-sided container with at least a 2 1/8"-wide opening, but maybe you're carrying something of that description already. Add whisk, add water, add powder, seal and shake for about 5 seconds. Works perfectly.

Update: Some recent experiments I did demonstrate that the Blender Ball whisk works just fine without a closed bottle as well -- just stick a spoon into it, and use as a normal whisk.
